Reading Email Remotely

When you are outside of the C.S. department, you should always use a secure IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) or POP (Post Office Protocol) connection to the departmental mail server. Using a secure connection makes password sniffing impossible and increases the security of our department and your data. The following section will explain how to connect securely using IMAP and POP.

General Configuration values for secure email

Set your mail server to mail.cs.duke.edu, this will allow both Thunderbird and Outlook to access the mail server's certificate, without a warning message.

The secure imap (simap) port is 993.
The secure imap (spop) port is 995.

Relaying Email from outside the department

Many users wish to send email through the department server when they are using computers outside the CS network. Typically this will result in a relaying denied message; relaying email in this way is a common technique used to send SPAM. User's wishing to relay their email will need to use SMTP AUTH/STARTTLS, which allows only users with valid CS accounts to relay email through the department server from outside the CS network.
